“Our environment, our responsibility. Let’s protect it together!”
– Kelechukwu Okezie
Neighbourhood Environment Watch (NEW), was formed purely out of the sense and need to create values and help shape society within an inclusive environmental developmental model, in which people in the neighbourhood would be inspired to own their environment and its rich biodiversity, and interact with it in a mutually beneficial relationship. The aim was and remains to address environmental and social justice challenges resulting from a lack of concordance between the people and their environment.
Neighbourhood Environment Watch Foundation started as an informal voluntary membership organization in 1999, with volunteers who subscribe to clean and healthy environment. The vision bearer is Kelechukwu Okezie who received the command in a series of dreams to start an organisation that focuses on environment and social justice. Young Okezie could not resist the persisitent spiritual order and moved to share the vision with few close friends like Barr Steve Opokeh, Late Innocent Ajah, Dr Ifeanyi Ikeh, Late Oko Onya, Mrs Chioma Chima, Mrs Nwokedi (Mama NEW) and few others. All accepted the message and promised to work together to address issues of clean and healthy environment within Abakaliki, the newly created capital of Ebonyi State. Engr Dr Paul Okorie (Action) who was then the General Manager of the Ebonyi State Environmental Protection Agency (EBSEPA) was approached and he gave his full support and encouraged the formation and promised collaboration with his agency (then (EBSEPA) to ensure the organisation meet its set objectives and missions. The group of young environmentalists would met every month to do community clean-up exercises, plant trees and organize public lectures to create awareness and take action against environmental pollution.
With time, the organisation grew into a traditional non-profit organisation and was registered with the Nigerian Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC), Abuja with registration Number 33938, in July 2009. Using a participatory approach and working with community volunteers, the organization documents critical problems of environmental degradation resulting from poor agricultural practices, artisanal mining and building the capacity of mining-impacted communities on human rights violations. NEW Foundation also uses ecological and ethnographical models in its research, data collection, and analysis. Today, NEW Foundation has grown to be recognised within Nigeria and in the world as a frontline environmental and social justice organisation.
