As part of its ongoing commitment to advancing gender equality and eliminating Gender-Based Violence (GBV), Neighbourhood Environment Watch (NEW) Foundation, through the Male Feminists Network (MFN) South-East Project, conducted a high-level advocacy visit to the Presidents General (PGs) of communities in Nkanu West Local Government Area, Enugu State, on June 19, 2026.
The engagement brought together 24 Presidents General, who play pivotal roles in community governance, policy formulation, conflict resolution, and the preservation of cultural values within their respective communities. Recognizing their influence in shaping community norms and development priorities, the advocacy focused on promoting gender-inclusive leadership, addressing harmful socio-cultural practices, and strengthening community accountability for the protection of women and girls.
A key issue discussed during the meeting was the persistent practice of disinheriting women from their fathers’ properties—a harmful tradition that continues to deny many women access to economic resources, financial security, and opportunities to contribute meaningfully to community development. Participants examined the social and economic consequences of discriminatory inheritance practices and explored the importance of ensuring that women enjoy equal rights and opportunities within their communities.
The discussions also emphasized the need to increase women’s participation in community leadership and decision-making processes, recognizing that inclusive governance leads to stronger, more responsive, and sustainable community development.
Beyond issues of inheritance and leadership, the advocacy highlighted the critical role of men as allies in preventing Gender-Based Violence and promoting healthy, respectful relationships between women and men. Participants were sensitized on relevant Enugu State and Federal laws addressing GBV and were guided through the various forms of violence, abuse, and discrimination that continue to affect women and girls.
An important aspect of the engagement was addressing common misconceptions surrounding gender equality and feminism. Some participants initially expressed concerns that promoting women’s rights could diminish the role of men in society. Through open dialogue, NEW Foundation clarified that the Male Feminists Network (MFN) seeks to challenge harmful gender norms not men themselves. The project promotes positive masculinity, encouraging men to become champions of respect, equality, accountability, partnership, and non-violence while working alongside women to build stronger and more inclusive communities.
The interactive session provided an opportunity for participants to ask questions, share community experiences, and identify practical actions that can help eliminate discriminatory practices and strengthen protections for women and girls.
At the conclusion of the advocacy visit, the Presidents General expressed strong support for the objectives of the Male Feminists Network Project and pledged to:
- Promote gender-equitable practices within their communities.
- Encourage greater participation of women in leadership and community decision-making.
- Advocate against discriminatory inheritance practices that deny women their rights.
- Support community-based efforts to prevent Gender-Based Violence and promote peaceful coexistence.
- Serve as advocates for positive masculinity and inclusive community development.
Their commitment represents a significant milestone in the collective effort to transform harmful social norms and foster communities where women and men can participate equally in leadership, development, and peacebuilding.
Through strategic engagements with traditional and community leaders, NEW Foundation continues to strengthen partnerships that drive lasting social change and create safer, more equitable communities across the South-East region.
