Open defecation remains a major public health and environmental challenge in Ebonyi State. It is concerning that areas around Udensi Roundabout and the Vanco Head Bridge have, at times, been identified by residents as locations where the practice occurs.
Beyond creating an unpleasant and unhygienic environment, open defecation poses serious risks to public health. It can contribute to the spread of diseases, contaminate the environment, pollute water sources, and negatively affect the appearance and dignity of our communities.
A cleaner and healthier Ebonyi requires the collective effort of everyone. Government has an important role to play by providing adequate and accessible public toilet facilities, improving sanitation infrastructure, and enforcing existing sanitation regulations. At the same time, citizens must take responsibility by practising proper hygiene, using available sanitation facilities, and discouraging behaviours that put public health at risk.
Every community deserves a clean, safe, and dignified environment. By working together, we can reduce open defecation, promote healthier communities, and protect the environment for present and future generations.
