3 September 2026 | Okohia Town, Isiala Mbano LGA, Imo State
During a high-level advocacy visit led by Dr. Kelechukwu Okezie of the Male Feminists Network (MFN) to Dr. Douglas Awurumibe, Community Leader of Okohia Town, Isiala Mbano LGA, Imo State, on 3 September 2026, the importance of collective community action against gender-based violence (GBV) was emphasised.
Dr. Douglas Awurumibe expressed his commitment to supporting efforts that educate the community on GBV, gender equality, and the rights and dignity of every individual.
He emphasised that the fight against GBV should not be left to women alone, noting that men, community leaders, families, and other stakeholders must speak up and take responsibility for creating a safer community.
He further acknowledged the important role of community leadership in influencing attitudes, addressing harmful practices, and encouraging people to speak out when violence occurs.
“We cannot remain silent when people in our community are experiencing violence. We must educate our people, encourage them to speak out, and work together to prevent violence in our homes and community.”
Dr. Awurumibe welcomed the engagement by MFN and expressed readiness to support continued conversations and community education aimed at promoting respect, equality, human rights, peaceful families, and a community free from gender-based violence.
His message reinforces a fundamental principle of community development: lasting change happens when communities themselves take ownership of the solutions.
